The Fourth Beast

The fourth โ€œbeastโ€ is presented in more detail than the first three.  It is the center of the vision. The other โ€œbeastsโ€ provide background information for the rise of this kingdom. Unlike the first three, it has no analog in the animal kingdom. It is an unnatural creature with โ€œiron teethโ€ and โ€œten horns.โ€

The Bear and the Leopard

In his vision, Daniel saw โ€œfour beasts ascendingโ€ from the sea. The first three featured characteristics from the animal kingdom – the winged lion, the bear, and the leopard with two pairs of wings. The fourth beast did not resemble any known species of animal.

The fourth beast was a horrifying monstrosity with โ€œgreat iron teeth,โ€ โ€œten horns,โ€ and another โ€œlittle horn, with a mouth speaking great things.โ€

Daniel’s First Three Beasts

In a dream, Daniel saw โ€œfour beasts ascendingโ€ from a chaotic sea. Each corresponded to one of the four parts of the โ€œgreat imageโ€ that Nebuchadnezzar saw in his dream with the head of gold, a torso of silver, brass thighs, and legs of iron and clay. Danielโ€™s vision of four creatures utilizes that same fourfold structure.
