The fourth โbeastโ is presented in more detail than the first three. It is the center of the vision. The other โbeastsโ provide background information for the rise of this kingdom. Unlike the first three, it has no analog in the animal kingdom. It is an unnatural creature with โiron teethโ and โten horns.โ

The Bear and the Leopard
In his vision, Daniel saw โfour beasts ascendingโ from the sea. The first three featured characteristics from the animal kingdom – the winged lion, the bear, and the leopard with two pairs of wings. The fourth beast did not resemble any known species of animal.
The fourth beast was a horrifying monstrosity with โgreat iron teeth,โ โten horns,โ and another โlittle horn, with a mouth speaking great things.โ

In a dream, Daniel saw โfour beasts ascendingโ from a chaotic sea. Each corresponded to one of the four parts of the โgreat imageโ that Nebuchadnezzar saw in his dream with the head of gold, a torso of silver, brass thighs, and legs of iron and clay. Danielโs vision of four creatures utilizes that same fourfold structure.

But he also condemned the prophetโs accusers to be cast to the lions instead of Daniel. Both incidents are reflected in the book of Revelation.

After the overthrow of the Babylonian kingdom, the new ruler appointed Daniel as his chief officer over the other civil servants of the city. This caused resentment among the other officials, so a conspiracy was hatched to destroy by trapping Daniel with his own words, even ensnaring the unwitting king in the plot.
