Abomination of Desolation, Little Horn

The Desolating Transgression

Next, Daniel receives a vision of a โ€œramโ€ and a โ€œgoat.โ€ The ram represents the kingdom of the โ€œMedes and Persians,โ€ and the goat the kingdom of Greece, beginning with its first great king who overthrew the โ€œram.โ€ The vision is followed by an interpretation provided by an angelic figure.

The focus of the vision is on the figure represented by the โ€œlittle horn,โ€ a king who rules one of the four lesser kingdoms that appear after the death of the โ€œgreat kingโ€ of Greece.

Mouth Speaking Great Things

In Revelation, the โ€œlittle hornโ€ is NOT explicitly named but its characteristics are present in the โ€œBeast from the sea.โ€ But the book does not retell the same story without changes. Time, Times, and Half a Time

In the interpretation of his vision, Daniel receives the limits for the time allotted to the โ€œlittle hornโ€ โ€“ โ€œTime, times, and part of a time.โ€ After this, he loses his domain. And Revelation uses this cipher for the โ€œshort seasonโ€ during which the โ€œDragonโ€ is authorized to persecute the โ€œsaints.โ€

On the Clouds

Key phrases from Danielโ€™s vision of the โ€œfour beasts ascending from the seaโ€ occur in the New Testament, most often in contexts concerning the future arrival of Jesus, but also in passages about the kingdom of God and Christโ€™s sovereignty.

This is especially so in the book of Revelation. It builds its picture of the single โ€œBeast from the seaโ€ that persecutes the โ€œsaintsโ€ on Daniel’s vision of โ€œfour beastsโ€ ascending from the sea.

Four Beasts – Interpretation

Danielโ€™s vision of the four beasts โ€œfrom the seaโ€ concludes with a judgment scene. In it, the figure โ€œlike a Son of Manโ€ approaches the โ€œAncient of Daysโ€ and receives everlasting โ€œdominion.โ€ His vision leaves Daniel confused and troubled, but an angel provides him with the interpretation.
