Two repeated themes in Revelation are closely related – โWitnessโ and โOvercome.โ Beginning with Jesus of Nazareth and his martyrdom on Calvary, his followers are summoned to persevere in his โTestimony.โ In this way, they will โovercomeโ and emerge victorious in the city of โNew Jerusalem.โ They must โovercome, even as I overcame.โ Moreover, Jesus is presented to the โSeven Assemblies of Asiaโ as the โFAITHFUL WITNESS, the Firstborn of the Dead, and the Ruler of the Kings of the Earth.โ

Martyrs under the Altar
The opening of the Fifth Seal revealed the souls of men kept โunderneathโ the Altar, saints who had been slain for their โTestimony.โ They pleaded with God for their vindication and for judgment on the โInhabitants of the Earthโ who had persecuted them. They were told to wait for Him to answer their plea until the full โnumberโ of their โfellow servantsโ who were going to be slain โjust as they wereโ was added to their company.

Babylon is revealed as a bejeweled harlot dripping with the shed blood of martyred saints โ Revelation 17:1-6.
In chapter 17, Revelation presents the impressive figure of โBabylon.โ She is labeled โharlotโ and identified as the โgreat city,โ and she is responsible for the deaths of the martyrs. โBabylonโ is also closely associated with the deceptions and economic power of the โBeast.โ In her, the bookโs first audience would see the city of Rome.
