Then Comes the End

In explaining the resurrection, Paul lists key events that will precede or coincide with the arrival of Jesus at the close of the present age.

Paul outlined the events that will occur at or shortly before the โ€œarrivalโ€ of Jesus in 1 Corinthians. The Greek noun โ€˜Parousiaโ€™ or โ€œarrivalโ€ is one of several terms Paul applies to the future coming of the Lord in his letters. Regardless of which term is used, the Apostle always refers to one โ€œcoming,โ€ one โ€œappearance,โ€ one โ€œrevelationโ€ and one โ€œappearanceโ€ of the Son of God, not two or more.

Day of Christ

The coming of Jesus is not a major topic in Paul’s letters to the Corinthians though it is in his Thessalonian correspondence. However, he does touch on several aspects of the event, including its identification as the โ€œDay of the Lord,โ€ the consummation of Godโ€™s kingdom, the resurrection of the righteous, the judgment of the wicked, and the cessation of death.

Final Events

In writing to the Corinthians, Paul outlines the events that will occur at or shortly before the โ€œarrivalโ€ or โ€˜Parousiaโ€™ of Jesus on the โ€œDay of Christ.โ€ โ€˜Parousiaโ€™ is one of several Greek terms applied by the Apostle to the future coming of the Lord. Regardless of which term is used, he always refers to one โ€œcoming,โ€ โ€œappearance,โ€ โ€œrevelation,โ€ or โ€œappearanceโ€ of Jesus at the end of the age, never two (or more).

The Ends of the Ages

The Apostle links the start of the โ€œlast daysโ€ with the death and resurrection of the Son of God. The time of fulfillment has arrived, and all Godโ€™s promises now find their โ€œyea and amenโ€ in him. โ€œIn these last days,โ€ God has โ€œspokenโ€ His definitive โ€œwordโ€ in His Son.

And Paul declares that the church consists of those men and women upon whom the โ€œends of the ages have come.โ€ While the term โ€œlast daysโ€ is not frequent in his letters, the Apostle does demonstrate his understanding that Historyโ€™s final era has commenced with the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth; therefore, nothing will ever be the same again.
