Tribulation vs Wrath

Disciples escape Godโ€™s wrath, but they endure tribulation. And according to Paul, the church has been appointed to tribulation. The terms โ€œtribulationโ€ and โ€œwrathโ€ areย NOTย synonymous in Paulโ€™s letters or in the book of Revelation. โ€œTribulationโ€ is what disciples endure for the sake of the gospel. โ€œWrathโ€ is the horrific fate that awaits the wicked at the final judgment when the Lord arrives in glory.

The Great Earthquake

In four separate passages, Revelation refers to a coming โ€œGREAT EARTHQUAKE,โ€ each time locating it on the day of โ€œwrath.โ€ Chaos in the heavens and unimaginable seismic shifts on the earth will mark the arrival of the โ€œDay of the Lord,โ€ the Great Dรฉnouement when God vindicates His people and punishes His enemies.

When John is summoned to heaven, he observes the โ€œthroneโ€ at the center of the universe surrounded by twenty-four smaller thrones occupied by โ€œfour and twenty elders.โ€ A series of visual and audible phenomena proceed from the โ€œthroneโ€ฆ flashes of lightning, loud voices, and claps of thunderโ€ โ€“ (Revelation 4:1-5).

APPOINTED FOR TRIBULATION

His disciples escape Godโ€™s โ€œwrathโ€ but endure โ€œtribulationโ€ to which they have been โ€œappointedโ€ โ€“ 1 Thessalonians 3:1-4.

In the New Testament, the terms โ€œtribulationโ€ and โ€œwrathโ€ are NOT synonymous. โ€œTribulationโ€ is what disciples endure for the sake of Jesus, but โ€œwrathโ€ is the horrific fate awaiting the wicked at the โ€œend of the age,โ€ the โ€œsecond death,โ€ which unrepentant sinners and apostates endure on account of their iniquities and betrayals.
