His Return, Last Days, New Creation

Jesus is not Late!

In his second epistle, Peter addresses the growing weariness of some believers due to the apparent delay in or even the failure of the โ€œarrivalโ€ of Jesus to materialize, an open door for false teachers and outside critics to exploit. Instead of the predicted terrestrial and cosmic upheaval, daily life was continuing as it always had. The Apostleโ€™s explanation is as relevant today as it was two thousand years ago.

DAY OF HIS REVELATION

Peter exhorts Christians to persevere in sufferings and to live holy lives in the knowledge of the impending day when Jesus will be revealed.

In his first epistle, Peter wrote to Christians who were under pressure to conform to the expectations of the surrounding society. HIS “ARRIVAL”

The โ€˜Parousiaโ€™ of Jesus will mean nothing less than the resurrection of the dead, the commencement of the New Creation, and the final judgment.

The Apostle Paul used several terms to refer to the same final event, the โ€œcoming of Jesus,โ€ but one that is especially prominent in his letters, โ€œarrivalโ€ or โ€˜parousia.โ€™ In using it, he provided his understanding of what will occur on that day. The Greek noun signifies the โ€œarrivalโ€ of someone or something, and not the process of its or his โ€œcomingโ€ (Strongโ€™s – #G3952).

HIS APPEARING

When Jesus โ€œappearsโ€ again, faithful believers will rejoice exceedingly and participate fully in the glories revealed on that day.

In his first epistle, the Apostle John exhorted his congregations to โ€œabideโ€ in Jesus so that โ€œwhen he shall appear, we may have boldness and not be shamed away from him at his arrival.โ€ This was his summons to believers for holy living in consideration of the inevitable โ€œarrivalโ€ of Jesus and the rewards that he will bring with him โ€“ (1 John 2:28โ€“3:3).

DAY OF CHRIST

In the Hebrew Bible, the โ€œday of the LORDโ€ refers to the time when Yahweh visits His people to punish the wicked and to reward the righteous. Often, it points to an event at the end of the age, but not exclusively so. In the New Testament, it becomes the โ€œday of Jesus Christ,โ€ not just in name, but also in content, and it refers to the day of his return at the end of the age.
