In his second epistle, Peter addresses the growing weariness of some believers due to the apparent delay in or even the failure of the โarrivalโ of Jesus to materialize, an open door for false teachers and outside critics to exploit. Instead of the predicted terrestrial and cosmic upheaval, daily life was continuing as it always had. The Apostleโs explanation is as relevant today as it was two thousand years ago.

DAY OF HIS REVELATION
Peter exhorts Christians to persevere in sufferings and to live holy lives in the knowledge of the impending day when Jesus will be revealed.
In his first epistle, Peter wrote to Christians who were under pressure to conform to the expectations of the surrounding society. Their situation was not unique, for they were members of the worldwide suffering community of believers. One of his themes is the necessity to remain steadfast through tribulations until the โday of visitationโ when Jesus is โrevealed.โ

The โParousiaโ of Jesus will mean nothing less than the resurrection of the dead, the commencement of the New Creation, and the final judgment.
The Apostle Paul used several terms to refer to the same final event, the โcoming of Jesus,โ but one that is especially prominent in his letters, โarrivalโ or โparousia.โ In using it, he provided his understanding of what will occur on that day. The Greek noun signifies the โarrivalโ of someone or something, and not the process of its or his โcomingโ (Strongโs – #G3952).

When Jesus โappearsโ again, faithful believers will rejoice exceedingly and participate fully in the glories revealed on that day.
In his first epistle, the Apostle John exhorted his congregations to โabideโ in Jesus so that โwhen he shall appear, we may have boldness and not be shamed away from him at his arrival.โ This was his summons to believers for holy living in consideration of the inevitable โarrivalโ of Jesus and the rewards that he will bring with him โ (1 John 2:28โ3:3).

In the Hebrew Bible, the โday of the LORDโ refers to the time when Yahweh visits His people to punish the wicked and to reward the righteous. Often, it points to an event at the end of the age, but not exclusively so. In the New Testament, it becomes the โday of Jesus Christ,โ not just in name, but also in content, and it refers to the day of his return at the end of the age.
