BABYLON RIDES THE BEAST

Babylon, the โ€œGreat Harlot,โ€ rides the Beast from the Sea with its seven heads and ten horns โ€“ Revelation 17:7-13.

โ€œBabylonโ€ sits on the same malignant creature seen earlier โ€œascending from the sea.โ€ It was an amalgamation of the four โ€œbeasts from the seaโ€ from Daniel. Now, we discover the โ€œlineageโ€ of the โ€œbeastโ€ and preview its destruction, all described with language from Danielโ€™s vision of the โ€œfourth beastโ€ and its โ€œlittle horn.โ€

GREAT HARLOT REVEALED

Babylon is revealed as a bejeweled harlot dripping with the shed blood of martyred saints โ€“ Revelation 17:1-6.

In chapter 17, Revelation presents the impressive figure of โ€œBabylon.โ€ She is labeled โ€œharlotโ€ and identified as the โ€œgreat city,โ€ and she is responsible for the deaths of the martyrs. โ€œBabylonโ€ is also closely associated with the deceptions and economic power of the โ€œBeast.โ€ In her, the bookโ€™s first audience would see the city of Rome.

The Seventh Bowl of Wrath

The Seventh Bowl (16:17-21)

(Revelation 16:17-21) โ€“ โ€œAnd the seventh poured out his bowl upon the air; and there came forth a great voice out of the temple, from the throne, saying, It is done: and there were flashes of lightning, and voices, and thunders; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since there were men upon the earth, so great an earthquake, so mighty. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and Babylon the great was remembered in the sight of God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And great hail, every stone about the weight of a talent, cometh down out of heaven upon men: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof is exceeding great.โ€

The primary Old Testament source of this image is the plague of hail on Egypt (Exodus 9:22-34). The pouring out of this bowl โ€œupon the airโ€ prepares for the โ€œhailโ€ with which this judgment concludes. Continue reading “The Seventh Bowl of Wrath”
