THAT Son of Man

In the four gospels, the โ€œSon of Manโ€ is the self-designation found most frequently on the lips of Jesus. The term is derived from Danielโ€™s vision of the one โ€œlike a Son of Manโ€ who receives the โ€œdominion and kingdomโ€ from the โ€œAncient of Days.โ€ And according to Jesus, โ€œall the tribes of the earthโ€ will mourn when โ€œthey see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven.โ€

DESOLATING ABOMINATION – CONTEXT

To understand the โ€œAbomination that Desolatesโ€ in Daniel, it is vital to pay attention to literary context.

In Daniel, the climax of the โ€œseventy weeksโ€ is the appearance of the โ€œabomination that desolatesโ€ in the final half of the โ€œseventieth week.โ€ But what, exactly, is this โ€œabominationโ€ and when did it appear? Is it a past or yet future event? We must begin with the information provided by the book of Daniel if we are to have any hope of answering these and similar questions.

TWO “LITTLE HORNS”?

The โ€œlittle hornโ€ is named in two visions. Is it the same figure in each case, or two different individuals? Daniel 7:7-8, 8:9-14.

The figure called the โ€œlittle hornโ€ figures prominently in Danielโ€™s visions, and it is explicitly named in the vision of the โ€œfourth beastโ€ and that of the โ€œram and goat.โ€ It is reasonable to assume both visions refer to the same figure. The historical references in the first vision are enigmatic, in the second, they are explicit. The careful comparison of parallels between the two visions is vital.

IDENTITY OF THE LITTLE HORN

The description of the โ€œlittle hornโ€ fits perfectly with the known history of the Seleucid king, Antiochus IV, โ€œEpiphanes.โ€

The image of the โ€œlittle hornโ€ represents a malevolent king from one of the Hellenic kingdoms that evolved from Alexander the Greatโ€™s empire. The historical allusions in Daniel chapter 8 make its identity clear, and by association, the identity of the fourth kingdom from the vision of four โ€œbeasts ascending from the seaโ€ from which this figure first appeared.

INTRODUCTION TO DANIEL

An introduction to the Book of Daniel with a brief overview of how the Book of Revelation applies it.

The book of Daniel is a well-structured literary work, not a collection of folk stories or random and unrelated visions. At the very beginning, the key themes of the book are presented in brief, then worked out in detail in the subsequent chapters, and each new vision builds on the preceding ones.
