The Word to Return

Understanding the โ€œstart dateโ€ of the โ€œseventy weeksโ€ is vital to its interpretation. WHEN the period commenced determines when it will end. Fortunately, the interpreting angel provided Daniel with that information – โ€œFrom the going forth of the word to return and to build Jerusalem.โ€ And the identification of this โ€œwordโ€ is found in the context of the chapter.

Seventy-Sevens Divided

The angel divided the period of โ€œseventy weeksโ€ into three divisions – the initial period of โ€œseven weeks,โ€ the second of โ€œsixty-two weeks,โ€ and the final segment of โ€œone week.โ€ The latter is subdivided further into two โ€œhalf weeks.โ€ And at the start of the prophecy, the angel listed six redemptive goals that must be achieved by the end of all seventy โ€œweeks.โ€

The Word of Jeremiah

Daniel received the revelation about the โ€œseventy weeksโ€ in the โ€œfirst yearโ€ of Darius the Mede, shortly after the fall of the Neo-Babylonian Empire to the โ€œMedes and Persians.โ€ And his inquiry and prayer indicate that the events in chapter 9 occurred before the return of the first Jewish exiles to Jerusalem after the decree of Cyrus the Great.

King of Fierce Countenance

Next, Daniel receives the interpretation of his vision of the โ€œram and goat.โ€ In chapter 7, only the first โ€œbeastโ€ can be identified with certainty โ€“ Babylon. In contrast, in the interpretation in chapter 8, two of the four kingdoms are identified by name, the kingdom of the โ€œMedes and Persiansโ€ and โ€œGreece.โ€
