False information about the โ€œday of the Lordโ€ caused alarm among many in the congregation at Thessalonica โ€“ 2 Thessalonians 2:1-2.

Paul addressed claims that the โ€œDay of the Lord had set in,” rumors that were disrupting the congregation in Thessalonica, apparently, spread by a โ€œspirit,โ€ a word (logos), or a letter, โ€œas if from us.โ€ In response, Paul listed two events that must occur BEFORE the โ€œparousiaโ€ of Jesus – the โ€œrevealing of the man of lawlessnessโ€ and the โ€œapostasy.โ€
